The DREAMS Program continues to make a meaningful difference in the lives of adolescent girls and young women (AGYW) across Siaya County.
Keeping Girls in School: Education Subsidy Support
To reduce school dropouts and boost attendance, we supported 3,863 AGYW with education subsidies. This included paying school fees and providing dignity packs—containing sanitary towels, underwear, and soap—to girls from vulnerable households. By removing these financial and social barriers, we’re helping girls stay in class, focus on their education, and avoid early marriage, exploitation, and abuse.
Parents and teachers have described the support as a lifeline, bringing hope to many struggling families.
Building Skills for the Future: Vocational Training
To promote economic independence, 275 AGYW enrolled in vocational training programs covering hairdressing, tailoring, catering, and other in-demand trades. After completing their training, girls are linked to internships or employment opportunities. These skills not only empower girls financially—they also help prevent risky behaviors like transactional sex, offering safer, more stable futures.
Guiding Girls Through Life’s Choices: Evidence-Based Interventions
We reached 8,816 AGYW this year with engaging, age-appropriate interventions like My Health, My Choice (MHMC), Shuga, and Healthy Choices for a Better Future (HCBF). Delivered through schools and community safe spaces, these interactive sessions help girls build confidence, understand HIV prevention, and make informed decisions about relationships and their futures. Using relatable content and trained facilitators has made these sessions both impactful and well-received.
Protecting Against HIV: Access to PrEP
Through the DREAMS Shinda Tena project, 821 girls and young women accessed Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis (PrEP)—a proven method of HIV prevention. Services are delivered through youth-friendly clinics and outreach events, ensuring privacy, support, and follow-up. Community health volunteers and mentors have been vital in encouraging uptake and adherence. As awareness grows, more girls are choosing to take charge of their health.
Expanding Our Reach: Enrolling the Most Vulnerable
Thanks to the efforts of local leaders, teachers, and mentors, the DREAMS program enrolled 10,345 new AGYW this year. Through school visits, village barazas, and door-to-door outreach, we identified girls most in need and brought them into the program. Each girl receives personalized, layered support—from education to health and economic empowerment—ensuring she has every chance to thrive.
The journey continues. As we expand our reach in Siaya, we remain committed to walking alongside every girl, helping her grow into a confident, healthy, and empowered young woman.
