On March 15, 2022, CHS joined the Ministry of Health (MOH), the National TB Program, and its partners to launch four TB, COVID and Asthma policy documents to guide health care workers on managing TB, COVID and Asthma in the country. The policies launched were the Interim Management Guide for TB and COVID-19, TB Public Private Mix Action Plan, Kenya National Asthma Management Guideline, and the Integrated TB, Leprosy & Lung Disease Guideline.
Speaking during the launch, the MOH, Director-General, Dr Patrick Amoth, affirmed Kenya’s commitment to the fight against TB and lung diseases. “With the launch of the documents, we recommit to the global fight to END TB and highlight the vital need to support and engage everyone in leading the fight against TB and other lung diseases,” Dr Amoth said.
CHS Chief Executive Officer, Dr Paul Wekesa, reassured Kenya’s Ministry of Health, National TB Program, county governments, implementing partners, and patient community representatives present of CHS’s commitment to support and ensure the effective implementation and dissemination of the new guidelines. “CHS remains deeply committed to supporting the implementation of the guidelines across the country. Healthy families remain at the heart of our organisation, and thus efficient service delivery is of priority to us, ” he said.
Through its CDC-funded Tegemeza Plus project and USAID-funded Tuberculosis Accelerated Response and Care II activity, CHS provided financial and technical support for the development and launch of the policy documents.
The New Guidelines
The Interim Management Guide for TB and COVID-19 guides health care workers on managing patients with presumed or confirmed TB and suspected or confirmed COVID-19 and follow-up.
The TB Public Private Mix (PPM) Action Plan guides the implementation of the public-private mix activities in Kenya. It promotes coordination and partnerships among the National TB Program, partners, and private sector health providers.
The Kenya National Asthma Management Guidelines guide health care workers on the treatment and management of asthma among children and adults in the country,
The Integrated TB, Leprosy, and Lung Disease Guideline guide the implementation of activities geared towards compacting TB, leprosy, and lung disease among populations and generations.
