During the month of November 2015, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) carried out supportive supervision at 36 CHS-supported health facilities in Central Kenya, where CHS implements its Tegemeza program. Tegemeza is a five year HIV prevention, care and treatment program funded by the U.S. President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR) through the CDC.
These site assessments are in line with PEPFAR’s requirements that aim to increase the impact of PEPFAR programs on the HIV epidemic through standardised monitoring of the quality of support (e.g. At health facilities; ward, district, etc.), focusing on key program area.
The support supervision is carried out using a tool known as the Site Improvement through Monitoring System (SIMS), which measures different aspects of HIV service delivery. SIMS aims to systematise and broaden ongoing PEPFAR site monitoring processes and improve documentation of this oversight through administration of standard tools that assess adherence to PEPFAR standards of care and service delivery, as well as within entities that support and guide service delivery.
At the end of each visit, the visited health facilities have an opportunity to receive feedback from the supervisors with the aim of increasing the quality of service delivery.
SIMS assessments are conducted on a regular and ongoing basis by CDC Kenya, on behalf of PEPFAR.
