Using Survival Analysis to Identify Risk Factors for Treatment Interruption among New and Retreatment Tuberculosis Patients in KenyaAbstract
Background
Interruptions in TB treatment compromise outcomes and fuel drug resistance. This study aimed to identify predictors of treatment interruption among TB patients in Kenya.
Methods
Retrospective cohort data from the national TB program were analyzed using survival analysis. Factors examined included demographic characteristics, TB category (new or retreatment), HIV status, and health facility type.
Results
Retreatment cases, patients with unknown HIV status, and treatment at private facilities had higher risk of interruption. The cumulative incidence of interruption was higher among males and older adults.
Conclusion
Targeted adherence support is needed for retreatment patients and those receiving care at private facilities. Integrating HIV testing and robust follow-up mechanisms may help reduce TB treatment interruptions.
